While working as a contractor for an off-site computer tape storage facility in the 90’s, I became aware of the need for disaster recovery preparations in the Information Technology industry. Back then, it was my job to switch out data back-up tapes at client libraries with ones we had stored off-site. The average data lag was one week, meaning if the client experienced a data loss that required a data restoral from tape; they could expect to lose up to one week of data. In today’s information driven society, this amount of data loss is no longer acceptable.
Most companies today tolerate no more than one day of a data loss, with some opting to pay for additional backups to limit themselves to mere hours of exposure. The limiting factor is just how much the disaster recovery manager is authorized to spend. The technology is there to backup data in real time, so that backing up to a physical tape after hours is no longer the only option. At the same time, this technology can be expensive; so many firms still use the older method of a manual tape backup of all servers at the end of the work day. When it comes to data recovery services, there are many options. I recommend looking into the various services offered and doing a cost analysis to see what best meets your needs.
With some financial firms, such as banking institutions, they are required to keep transaction level detail records in accordance with applicable laws. A data loss can occur in one of many ways. Some are rather transparent, like a hardware failure. This can occur when a server blade fails and one must be replaced. Some other data losses require more imagination to predict. For instance, if a data center employee mistakenly unplugs the wrong power strip during a planned outage, they can take out the wrong server and its backup power supply in one instant. These are known in the industry as unplanned outages and are costly to rectify. Many man hours can be spent correcting needless errors. During natural disasters, like Hurricane Katrina, whole buildings can be lost. Situations like this underline the need for offsite storage services.
Most large companies today have the forethought to separate their data centers from there main center of operations. Those companies that do not separate their facilities usually pay for a data recovery service. A server can crash at any given moment. When the server goes down, it takes with it any updates since the data flowing through it was last saved. In the event of a hard drive crash, as many of us personal computer users have experienced, a user stands to lose everything on their hard drive. That is why hard drive data recovery is about people losing priceless photos, email, or personal documents? Don’t let yourself be a victim of this situation, back up your data today!
